This article by Charles Krauthammer is one of the best I have read yet on the abhorrent idea of putting a mosque at Ground Zero. And to think it was published by the liberal irrelevant buffoons at the Washington Post. Who would thunk?
Another good quote from William McGurn at the WSJ: "not all big questions can—or should—be reduced to legal right." Some good excerpts from Krauthammer's article:It's why the commercial viewing tower built right on the border of Gettysburg was taken down by the Park Service. It's why, while no one objects to Japanese cultural centers, the idea of putting one up at Pearl Harbor would be offensive.
And why Pope John Paul II ordered the Carmelite nuns to leave the convent they had established at Auschwitz. He was in no way devaluing their heartfelt mission to pray for the souls of the dead. He was teaching them a lesson in respect: This is not your place; it belongs to others. However pure your voice, better to let silence reign.
Location matters. Especially this location. Ground Zero is the site of the greatest mass murder in American history -- perpetrated by Muslims of a particular Islamist orthodoxy in whose cause they died and in whose name they killed.
The governor of New York offered to help find land to build the mosque elsewhere. A mosque really seeking to build bridges, Rauf's ostensible hope for the structure, would accept the offer.
I'm tired of people making up random crap sports and then getting all whiny when the rest of the world doesn't agree that it's a sport. Just because you put the word "ultimate" or "competitive" in front of your "activity" doesn't make it a sport. If that's the case, I'm "ultimate typing" right now, and I am also a "competitive ass picker." And I now want my public educational institution to steal some more tax dollars to give me facilities and recognize me even though I couldn't compete in a real varsity sport.
Despite Recent Ruling, Competitive Cheerleading Should Still Qualify As Sport
by Jill Seward on Jul 27, 2010 12:58:35 AM
Pom-poms and bullhorns are items of the past when it comes to the newly founded sport of competitive cheer. Yes, I said sport.

And then...
Webster's Dictionary defines sport as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature."

The NCAA ruled in 2006 that the college could keep the Tribe nickname but its feathered logo was demeaning to Native Americans and had to go.Seriously - how the HELL is this demeaning to Native Americans? How the hell does Florida State get away with it? Sometimes our f-ing country SUCKS!
Debbie McLucas comes from a patriotic family – her husband and both of her sons served in the U.S. military, and her daughter is currently deployed to Iraq on her second tour of duty as a combat medic. So when McLucas arrived at work at a Texas hospital last Friday, she was stunned to be told that the Stars and Stripes she had hung in her office in advance of Memorial Day were offensive, and that the flag had been removed.

I was informed by the Rector on Sunday, after our Charter Day celebrations, that my contract will not be renewed in July. Appropriately, serving the College in the wake of such a decision is beyond my imagining. Accordingly, I have advised the Rector, and announce today, effective immediately, my resignation as president of the College of William & Mary. I return to the faculty of the school of law to resume teaching and writing.Yeah - because you can't imagine anything beyond what you're going to eat for dinner. And resuming "teaching" - sure - if by that you mean teaching how to disregard public opinion and force a communist dictatorship on a college.
First, as is widely known, I altered the way a Christian cross was displayed in a public facility...Altered? Really? Or how about tried to have removed? Sorry piggy - it may be a public facility, but it is a CHAPEL. Not a mosque, not a synagogue - it's a Christian chapel. And crosses go in chapels. That's the way it is, no matter how much your fat liberal ass wants it to be all lovey dovey kumbaya with the whole world. Freak.
Second, I have refused, now on two occasions, to ban from the campus a program funded by our student-fee-based, and student-governed, speaker series.Just so happened that both times it allowed you to push your own agenda on the rest of the world. Might you feel differently if your own family happened to work in those industries?
Third, in my early months here, ... I introduced an aggressive Gateway scholarship program...What, do you want a medal? Who cares? Stop trying to play Robin Hood - you're too fat and misguided. Why should the rest of us have to pay for these kids to go to school. Enough with your communism.
Fourth, from the outset of my presidency, I have made it clear that if the College is to reach its aspirations of leadership, it is essential that it become a more diverse, less homogeneous institution....Let's tow the liberal party line and hire people based on their color rather than their qualifications. Good idea. Reverse discrimination is still discrimination. Quotas don't work. And from what I've read, affirmative action is illegal in Virginia. Moron.
As the result of these decisions, the last sixteen months have been challenging ones for me and my family. Why - did your local Arby's close?
A committed, relentless, frequently untruthful and vicious campaign -- on the internet and in the press -- has been waged against me, my wife and my daughters. .... That campaign has now been rendered successful. And those same voices will no doubt claim victory today.Yes - we do. Too bad - you LOSE!
I add only that, on Sunday, the Board of Visitors offered both my wife and me substantial economic incentives if we would agree “not to characterize [the non-renewal decision] as based on ideological grounds” or make any other statement about my departure without their approval. Some members may have intended this as a gesture of generosity to ease my transition. But the stipulation of censorship made it seem like something else entirely. We, of course, rejected the offer. It would have required that I make statements I believe to be untrue and that I believe most would find non-credible. I’ve said before that the values of the College are not for sale. Neither are ours.Too bad they didn't offer you a book of McDonald's coupons. You would have sold out for that.
Mine, to be sure, has not been a perfect presidency. I have sometimes moved too swiftly, and perhaps paid insufficient attention to the processes and practices of a strong and complex university. A wiser leader would likely have done otherwise. Finally - something I can agree with. See ya later jackass! Good riddance. Kudos to our BOV. They are people who should be commended for their fortitude in the face of the freak that was president. Glad to know that eventually public opinion wins out and we don't have to continue with political correctness just for the sake of political correctness. Finally - I am really surprised that there are really a lot of folks who read my posts. I really enjoy that what I write evokes enough emotion in other people to take the time to write back. People leave me a lot of interesting comments that never make it into the public domain. Mostly because they are liberal freaks, and guess what - my website is run by a dictatorship - Me! No need for equal time - that's what Gene would want. I pay for the right to do what ever I want in my little corner. Finally - the NCAA sucks too. Still sucks - bad. Give W&M our feathers back. Gene decided to stop fighting. Maybe the next person will reconsider. I'm still trying to figure out how two feathers are offensive to indians. But back to the real news of the day. To all you Gene-loving freaks out there - too bad. You lose. Don't hate the player - hate the game.

Writing a wrong - Fans charged in Fenway frenzy submit essaysA bunch of people were arrested near Fenway the night the Sox won the ALCS this year. I will say that Boston law enforcement has gone a little overboard in a typical government reactionary manner since the 2004 ALCS celebration - and yes, I do know what happened then, and it sucks, but at some point, too much is too much. Whenever a Massachusetts sports team wins anything, all of a sudden it's like we're living under marshal law. I won't really spout off on that right now, even though that pisses me off, except to make the passing comment - enough already - let people have some fun without officers using it as an excuse to abuse some citizens. Putting that aside, if you're going to punish people, then punish them already. Afterward, evidently a judge in Roxbury decided to make 7 of 17 people arrested write essays as part of their punishment. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Seriously. This judge sounds like an old, out of touch hippie. It's the legal equivalent of a "time-out". God I hate that - time outs do nothing. If you are going to tell your kids that they did something wrong (even if they didn't), then spank them, instill some fear, and they won't do it again. If you are going to tell college kids that they did something wrong (even if they didn't), then lock them up, fine them, put them on probation, instill some fear, and they won't do it again.

Here are some objective statistics you won't find on the W&M website or in the Alumni Magazine: 1) Undergrad applications, an indicator of reputation, were up an average of 4% among the top ten Southern schools but up only 0.9% at W&M for the 2007 entering class (UVa's were up 10% and Rice 15%). Yield at W&M has fallen from 41% to 38% in the past two years (UVa’s yield is 51%). 2) Entering W&M freshmen SAT midpoints (1340) and those in the top 10% of their high school class (80%) are flat. The top ten Southern school averages are 1363 and 80%, respectively (UVa’s is 88%). 3) The College fell 2 points (31=>33) in the most recent US News rankings while the law school (Marshall-Wythe) fell 4 points (27=>31). These rankings highlighted W&M’s poor financial condition. 4) Nichol's loss of a major donor’s $10-12 MM bequest and others kept the Campaign from reaching a much higher level (more than 140 Mason School graduates have officially withdrawn their financial support). The Campaign’s growth rate was just 9% in FY 2007. The W&M Annual Fund has also missed its $5.0 MM (2006) and $5.2 MM (2007) targets for the past two years. Nichol pre-announced results in February, retracted, withheld in April, promised to wait until June 30th, then pre-announced June 13th. 5) W&M’s endowment grew 12% in FY 2006 -- most was from investment income, not new gifts & pledges -- while the average for top ten Southern schools was 14%. W&M fell another point (127=>128) in the 2006 NACUBO endowment rankings released in February. Nichol still hasn’t released the FY 2007 endowment results even though the fiscal year closed June 30th. 6) The Campaign for W&M (“Campaign”) has supposedly raised $518 million in the past 7 years but only $120 million has accrued to endowment. The internal target, according to Dennis Cross and Sean Pieri, was $200-250 million. By comparison, the University of Richmond, Virginia Tech and UVa endowments were up more than $200 million, $337 million and $1.2 billion, respectively, during the same period. 7) The Wren Cross Removal and subsequent “compromise” cost the school dearly. More than 18,000 people signed the anti-Nichol STWC online petition -- almost 5,000 were alumni & students – and many of these have turned their backs on the school forever. Only 10% as many signed the pro-Nichol petition. BOV support for Nichol over the needs of the College seriously undermined alumni relations. 8 ) A March 6, 2007 press release by the W&M University Relations Office (Mike Connolly) made such misleading statements as "This practice is similar to that used by other universities with historic chapels, including the University of Virginia." Truth is, neither UVa nor any other US university with a historic chapel put their cross in a glass case at the time. Further, more than two-thirds (68%) of 28 top public universities display crosses in their chapels. Rector Powell and Alan Meese both denied responsibility. 9) Tribe Athletics have also been in decline under the Nichol Administration. The football team fell from 11 wins in 2004-05 (3 losses) to only 3 wins (8 losses) in the 2006-07 season while the baseball team fell from 37 wins (20 losses) in 2004-05 to 23 wins (29 losses) in 2006-07. The basketball team had only 8 wins (20 losses) in 2006-07. Also, the school just spent $30 million for the Laycock Football Center, $850 thousand on the new scoreboard at Zable Stadium --which has been beset by technical problems -- and $650 thousand on insufficient field lighting. Nichol also let the NCAA steal the Tribe’s feathers and pressured the Tribe Club to get rid of its colorful “Brave, Warrior and Chief” giving levels. 10) Nichol and his wife combined cost the school more than $600 thousand per year in compensation (a job was created for Glenn George) not to mention Religion Committee expenses and Nichol’s extensive foreign travel costs. Other liabilities include Nichol’s 2nd tier academic credentials and poor professional track record (Colorado's law school fell from 35=>47 and almost lost its ABA accreditation under Nichol while Chapel Hill's law school plummeted from 21=>29 in the rankings while he was dean). He also lost two US Congressional races and misrepresented his football career (he was never recruited by the pros). The school has sustained major damage to alumni relations, fundraising and reputation under the Nichol Administration and is in serious danger of falling further in the rankings. The latest ranking declines should be a wake-up call (GMU is on Marshall-Wythe's heels and Georgia Tech will soon overtake the College). The competition is coming up fast and it’s all about endowment. Even Arkansas, Louisiana State and Texas Tech have higher endowments. Most alumni still can't believe the BOV dropped this bomb on the school. Denial is the only way that some alumni can deal with the betrayal. If the image below is too big to read, click on it to open it by itself:
